Provenance
Note:In mythology, Amalthea was the she-goat nurse and most-frequently mentioned foster mother of Zeus who nourished the infant-god during his early upbringing in a cave on the island of Crete. This figural group is modeled after the nymph-form depiction of Amalthea sculpted by Pierre Julien in 1787 for installation inside Marie Antoinette's dairy, or temple du lait, at the Château de Rambouillet.
